Today, one of the most storied newsrooms in the country — The Washington Post — announced it will cut about one-third of its staff, including journalists across the newsroom, international desks, sports, and other departments, as part of a major restructuring.

It’s a staggering number. And it’s not an isolated one.

Over the past few years, U.S. media, entertainment, broadcast, and news industries have shed tens of thousands of jobs. In 2025 alone, more than 17,000 layoffs have already been announced in the media. Nearly 10,000 journalists have lost newsroom jobs in the last three years (I’m one of them). U.S. newsroom employment is now declining faster than almost any other sector.
